001 · Archivist's Note
Cataloguing note
This notebook was surrendered by a physical therapy clinic during an unrelated records disposal. It was not sought out. Nothing about its cover, binding, or first forty pages distinguishes it from any other patient-kept rehabilitation log. It is catalogued here because of what appears on page 41 onward, and because the phrase used as this case's working title appears in the subject's own hand, unprompted, three weeks before archivists adopted it.
Use restriction
Entries are reproduced with spelling and abbreviation intact. Ellipses mark water damage, not editorial omission. No entry has been reordered.
Parallel noted — unconfirmed
A separate document in unrelated custody describes a university-aged subject, a comparable pre-onset sensory disturbance in an academic setting, and a maternal-line heirloom mentioned without explanation. Handwriting comparison was inconclusive. Filed here as parallel only. Status: unverified.

Selected pages, in sequence. Full log runs 61 pages; 14 are legible.
Week 1 — post-opreps logged: 30 / 30
Dr. said 3 sets of 10, slow, stop if it pulls wrong. It pulls wrong on every one. Did the 30. Iced after like she said. Nothing to report.
Week 4reps logged: 30 / 30 (+30 unlisted)
Did the sheet, then did it again after dinner. Didn't tell them at the appt. It's not that it hurts less. It's that I know exactly where it's going to hurt now, so it doesn't surprise me anymore. That's not the same thing as better. Writing it down so I remember it's not the same thing.
Week 6reps logged: 60
Fluorescent tube in the therapy room's been dying for weeks, flickers down the hallway ahead of you like it's tracking which room you're headed to. Todd says it's just old wiring. Probably is. Sat under it longer than I needed to today. Face went a little numb, the good kind, like standing in cold air. Didn't mention it. Nothing to mention.
Week 7reps logged: 30 60
PT asked why my range improved faster than the chart says it should. Told her I was "diligent." Didn't tell her about the second set, or the third. She seemed pleased. I did not correct her.

Week 9reps logged: 90
Skipped the birthday thing. Told them I had a session. I did not have a session. I had ninety reps and the apartment to myself and I wanted the second thing more than the first thing and that is the part I keep writing down and then wanting to cross out.
Week 12reps logged: — no count kept —
Stopped counting. Counting was for when I didn't trust the motion yet. I trust the motion now. What I don't trust is how quiet it got in here once I stopped needing anyone to check my form.
Put my grandmother's sewing shears back out on the shelf this week, the ones passed down, don't even sew. Just wanted them where I could see them. Didn't examine that thought further.
It's practice in pain. Not practice, then pain stops. Practice in it. Not sure why that phrase came out but I underlined it twice so I'd remember I meant it. Started keeping this whole notebook the way you'd keep a collection, not a diary — the word that came to me was curator. Don't know why that word either.
Week 16reps logged: unrecorded
Missed the follow-up. Rescheduled it twice, then let it lapse. Told myself the exercises were the same either way and a clinic can't teach me anything about my own shoulder that repetition hasn't already. That is probably true. I notice I only think in terms of what is "probably true" now. I used to think in terms of what I wanted.
— pages 52 through 58 water damaged, unrecoverable —
final legible entry—
Someone asked if it still hurts. I said no, which is accurate and also not what they were asking.

003 · Case Questions
1
Who was this person before contact?
A post-surgical patient on a standard 8-week PT protocol, by all early entries compliant and unremarkable.
2
What changed in their behavior?
Prescribed reps were quietly doubled and tripled, unreported to the clinician. Counting itself was abandoned by Week 12.
3
What did they gain?
Range of motion and pain tolerance outpacing the clinical timeline. A form of bodily certainty that no longer required external confirmation.
4
What did it cost them?
A missed birthday, an abandoned clinical relationship, and a preference for solitary repetition over the people who had been checking on their recovery.
5
What is the Signal?
— absent. Not addressed at any point in the recovered material.
004 · Cost Law — Observed Correlation
faster physical recovery→abandoned clinical relationship
pain became predictable→no longer worth mentioning
bodily self-trust→solitary repetition over company
005 · Cross-Reference
The phrase recorded, underlined, and unexplained at Week 12 predates any external use archivists are aware of. The case does not explain the project. The project borrowed a phrase that already existed in the record.
Addendum — later cataloguing pass
A second document has since been catalogued under CF-020, sharing the self-descriptor noted above. This addendum is appended, not merged; CF-019's original material is unchanged. See CF-020, Cross-Reference.
